History

Aberdeen Airport was opened on 28th July 1934 and its intended use was to provide a link to the northern islands of Scotland and London. During the Second World War the airfield was taken over by the RAF and was mainly used as a photographic reconnaissance base. The airport was nationalised in 1947. 1967 saw the first offshore helicopter flight by Bristow linking the growing number of North Sea oil rigs to the mainland. With the North Sea oil boom in full swing, Aberdeen Airport became the world's largest heliport.

In 1975 the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) handed Aberdeen Airport over to the British Airports Authority (BAA) and two years later a new terminal was opened after a £10 million investment at the airport. A major departure lounge development was completed in 1992.

Local noise constraints had prevented the airport from accepting or dispatching aircraft between 22:30 and 06:00, however the city council removed this restriction in March 2005 and the airport can now operate 24 hours a day. In 2006, the Spanish Ferrovial Group took control of BAA and its airports. A £10 million refurbished Departure Lounge was opened in June 2007 and work began in the following year on a £2 million terminal forecourt project. Aberdeen Airport celebrated its 75th birthday in July 2009. With a thriving helicopter industry and a growing demand for fixed-wing services, Aberdeen has the busiest runway/airspace in Scotland and the fifth-busiest runway in the United Kingdom.
